A new approach to adult services

Honeyman Services was founded in November 2014 by husband and wife team Dave and Stacey. After having many years of experience in this field, Stacey and Dave decided they wanted to create a different approach to day program services. Opening a Day Program was a very personal dream of theirs by giving their members opportunities they may otherwise never have, teaching and coaching life skills, and taking the risk of not being like other day programs.

Day Program

The Honeyman’s felt there needed to a be a change like simple things of not carrying sack lunches in the community for a more dignified community experience. Other changes include our community groups mostly access public conveyances such as RTD buses and UBER to attend community-based activities. Members review daily the community resources necessary to participate in the community like learning how to use google maps, real time bus routes, RTD app, or UBER/Lyft apps. This allows our members to increase their community connection, build relationships and natural supports, while having increased opportunities to interact with non-disabled community members. We love to see the confidence when traveling within the community that our members have. We also include our members in the planning of activities for each month. The members can make suggestions and research ideas with staff. This allows members to have input into their day.

Ride Share to the Rescue

Transportation has always been a major obstacle in accessing the community independently for many people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. To address this transportation issues Honeyman Services began utilizing Ride Share services such as UBER and Lyft as an alternative for our members. This program has been extremely successful and very well received by those who patriciate in it. Members use Ride Share to access Honeyman Services facility and also to travel to activity destinations in the community. Members are trained how to use the Ride Share App and are supported through out the process. Honeyman Services was the first program to begin to using Ride Share this way and the program has become a model for other service agencies. In addition to Ride Share Honeyman Services focuses on learning how to use public transit as a way to expand their transportation options and experience real community connections.
